Jax State v. A and M - Post Game Review

It was a completely dominant performance by JSU in a game that was never in doubt. A & M's game plan was to blitz Perrilloux, thus daring JSU to throw the deep ball. The Gamecocks took the dare and Perrilloux hit bombs to freshman sensation, Alan Bonner, 57 yards, LaRay Williams (51 yards) and James Wilkerson (59 yards). The Gamecocks either scored touchdowns or attempted field goals on an incredible 9 of 13 offensive drives. Unfortunately, we only converted 2 of 4 field goal attempts. In contrast, A&M only scored on 3 of 13 opportunities. JSU forced 8 punts and stopped A&M on downs one time.

The Gamecocks dominated the statistics as well as the scoreboard. JSU had 23 first downs to 11 for the Bulldogs and had 494 total offensive yards to A&M's 257. The Gamecocks matched up much better against Georgia Tech and FSU than A & M did against FSU. A & M linebacker summed it up best when he told the Huntsville Times: "They came to play. I don't think we've seen a team that came and hit us in the mouth and played with the level of intensity they played with. Tennessee State and Hampton were good teams, but Jacksonville State was on another level . . ."

STARS OF THE GAME

*Perrilloux- threw for 293yards with no picks;
*James Wilkerson, 175 all purpose yards;
*Allen Bonner, 161 all purpose yards;
*James Shaw, 4 catches for 71 yards;
*Alexander Henderson - 8 tackles;
*Brandt Thomas - 9 tackles w/ 2 tackles for a loss
*Torrey Davis - spent the whole night in A & M's backfield
*The Secondary - outstanding performance all night long

NEWCOMERS
JSU was able to play a host of guys who had not played much previously. Highly touted freshman, Jahron Brown, a huge fullback looked particularly good carrying the ball 7 times for 42 yards. He also had a great block which sprung Jamal Young on a long run. Brown did fumble once and there was a moment of drama on the sidelines when Coach Crowe apparently let him know what he thought about it.

Other young Gamecocks seeing some or significant action for the first time included Rod Byrd, Brent Tolson, Matt Thompkins, Ben Puckett, Colt Kennedy, Matt Staub, Devon Hayes and Denzel Cheeks.

QUESTIONS HEADING INTO NEXT WEEK

-When will JSU get wide receiver John Houston Whiddon and Defensive Lineman Jamison Wadley be back?

-Why haven't we seen more of Brandon George? George did not carry the ball against A&M and only has a handful of carries coming into the season.

-Will four straight weeks on the road affect JSU's performance in Perrilloux's homecoming game against Nichols State? Nichols was beaten soundly by Lousiana Tech on Saturday.

-How high will the Gamecocks climb in the rankings? This is a team on a mission.
