JSU Soccer: Another JSU Team on the Rise

A big thank you to JSU Soccer Dad for contributing on JSU Soccer this week.

The 2009 JSU Women's Soccer team is off to it's best start since 2004 with their current record being 3-2. After starting with a loss at Mercer, the Gamecock Soccer squad has dominated the pitch. The other loss at home to Alabama was a physical contest that was offensively controlled by JSU who scored first before the Crimson Tide came back to win by a score of 2-1. Their first 2 victories came in two shutouts against North Georgia and 2008 NCAA Soccer tournament competitor Mississippi Valley State.

Gamecock Soccer is currently in 2nd place in the OVC standings and two of their players were honored in the first two weeks of the season. Sophomore Christine Cunningham was named OVC Goalkeeper of the Week after the first weekend and after that senior Amber DeLaney was named OVC Soccer Offensive Player of the Week.

This past weekend, JSU Soccer traveled to Baton Rouge and defeated Southern University 4-0. They returned late Sunday after having their match against Southeastern University cancelled because of thunderstorms.

This Wednesday, they have a home game against Alabama A&M and this coming Sunday, Nicholls State makes a visit to Jacksonville to challenge Gamecock Soccer on their home turf.

The following weekend, the soccer team travels to Cullohwee, North Carolina to compete in the Catamount Classic where they come up against the host Western Carolina on Friday before facing Elon that Sunday. Three days after that they travel to Montgomery to play Alabama State.

Then the meat of the schedule begins the weekend of September 25 with competition against rival OVC schools. The first two up are Murray State on Friday night then UT-Martin on Sunday afternoon. The next weekend, JSU Soccer travels to the Bluegrass State to face off against 2008 OVC Champs and 2008 NCAA Tournament Competitor Morehead State and Eastern Kentucky. There's a return trip home for one game against Austin Peay then it's back on the road to match-up against SEMO and Eastern Illinois. The final game of the regular season is at home against Tennessee Tech.

JSU Soccer finished one game shy last year of qualifying for the OVC tournament and were picked to finish in 7th place during the preseason. The 2009 edition of Gamecock Soccer, which includes 10 returnees and 13 newcomers, has already made a statement three weeks into the season that they are shooting for the conference tournament and beyond.

  1. JSU has really turned the corner in so many sports. Tennis, volleyball, baseball, softball and rifle all compete at a national level. Soccer and basketball seem to be on the rise. Football seems to always battle it out w/EKU for most dominant team in the ovc.
